Happy Birthday Canada!

Before we get started pulling you in with all of our tasty offerings, just wanted to let you all know that Hank's will be closed tomorrow in honour of this beautiful country. We'll be back in full force on Thursday, ready and waiting for all you lovelies.
Today however, we are packed with delicious spring goodness. FINALLY we are starting to see some progress from the ground, new lettuces, strawberries are in every corner of our kitchen in all sorts of shapes and forms.

The salads we're offering today.
Soba noodle salad with tofu and house made kale kimchi. The staff have already made claims to half our stock.
There is a strawberry and spinach salad with candied walnuts and poppy seed yogurt vinaigrette, which is my personal favourite and almost made me weepy with summer excitement (ignore the weather for the next couple of days and eat summer instead).
What else... we have our organic chicken salad which is an excellent combo with the Strawberry salad or even on it's own.
And another new salad is a roasted spring vegetable, colourful, delicious and unbelievably tasty.

The soup today is bacon and cabbage. If you have the chills at all or if this weather has crept into your bones, this soup will fix you up.

Alright ya'll. I'm going to get ready for you. See you soon!

What's brewing at Hanks...besides Thunder and Lightening

Well, we aren't actually brewing the weather ourselves...we would if we could.
We've got a Chicken and Chorizo stew to stick to your ribs and turbo boost you through this summer Monday. If you're feeling more salady, man we've got salads. Apple Radish Slaw, awesome with a sandwich. Cumbrae's Chicken Salad, lots of chicken, proteiny goodness. Macaroni Salad, which tastes like Mom's (if you're mom was an awesome cook). We have a green salad with grilled summer vegetables and a carrot salad dressing. Doesn't get much healthier..... or does it? The summer Barley Lemon Salad, is awesome, really low in fat and super filling. I've been alternating between that and the Macaroni Salad for the last few days.
Who knew salad could be delicious? I guess Hank did.

See you all soon. Hope you had a lovely and relaxing weekend.

On Strike

I live on the 32nd floor of my apartment building. So, thankfully, even if the Pope doesn't come to save us from our garbage my apartment will be high above the city still when we are drowned in black bags.
What good fun! Remember, you can still divert your waste without littering. It's just going to take a little bit more effort on our part.

Stew today is a Minty Lamb Stew. You know you want it.

Sandwich Special will continue to be Chicken Salad Sandwich -a tangy, bold chicken mixture served with greens and sheep's milk cheddar.

Salad Special will be Turducken Salad! A salad of greens with Turducken (a roulade of Turkey, Duck and Chicken) on top. Served with a Black Current Vinaigrette. YUM.

Let the Good Times Roll

Beach Balls and New Kids On The Block ended the first day of summer at the Molson Amphitheatre last night in a hilarious show that the 80's are clearly back. Even our weird ol' musical tastes. It was fun anyway.

Let's all hope our weeks are filled with good weather, barbecues and friends.
Keep yourself fit and fast with lunch from Hank's.

Lots of great stuff coming out of the kitchen...
where to start??

One hot thing today - a soup - Coconut, Carrot & Ginger Soup. Yummy and fresh.

Niçoise salad - almost traditional, except ours is dressed with a fresh basil vinaigrette and has some grilled asparagus. Topped with tuna and boiled eggs - sure to tempt the tummy, friendly for lacto-ovo pescetarians.
(A Note: The Olives are Fresh and Lovely - They have pits, use caution!)

Turducken Salad! A salad of greens with Turducken (a roulade of Turkey, Duck and Chicken) on top. Served with a Black Current Vinaigrette.

Special Sammy! Chicken Salad Sandwich - a tangy, bold chicken mixture served with greens and sheep's milk cheddar.

Max

Good morning from the other side of the moon.
It's time for coffee, coffeee, coffeees as we all recover from our Saturday night trails.

To pick you up we've put on a pot of Pork, Bean and Cabbage Soup. It's sure to cure what ails you.

Niçoise salad - almost traditional, except ours is dressed with a fresh basil vinaigrette and has some grilled asparagus. Topped with tuna and boiled eggs - sure to tempt the tummy, friendly for lacto-ovo pescetarians.

Blogs I Love Part#2

Part #2 in a series of I-don't-know-how-many:

If you're a real downtowner I hope you have discovered or used blogto.com at least once.
It has just about every restaurant listed with a map, reviews and tons of special features with one that is sure to tickle your fancy. Don't forget to use the "Interactive Toronto Map" found on the right portion of the page under "Browse by Category." I'm sure I've saved hundreds of tourists from a lousy trip to Toronto by referring them to this website. (Beats the pants off of Chow Hound, that's for sure.)
From the Morning Brew (a news reel from a good variety of sources) to Best Of Toronto this website is the place to find out what is going on and what's good where you're going in our fine city.

In other news...
You're Special. And here's what we have for special folks today:

Chicken and Mushroom Soup. Tarragon gives this soup some wicked taste worth coming in for.

Niçoise salad - almost traditional, except ours is dressed with a fresh basil vinaigrette and has some grilled asparagus. Topped with tuna and boiled eggs - sure to tempt the tummy, friendly for lacto-ovo pescetarians.
(A Note: The Black Olives are Fresh and Lovely - They have pits, use caution!)

Macaroni Salad with Summer Vegetable (Asparagus, Sweet Peppers, Red Onion)
This is NOT your mom's Macaroni Salad. Hank punches down your preconceived notion of Macaroni Salad with (what is sure to be) a Hank's Classic.

Do something to celebrate Pride this weekend. Grab something from Hank's to keep your strength up!

Chores on Saturday

If you get a "real" weekend - check the weather.
Yesterday Saturday had no rain but today it does.
So, get done your cleaning and then head on out on Sunday.
Worse things have happened at sea.

To get you up and running for the weekend we've got two special things:

We have only one hot guy special - it's Beef and Bison Stew. It's got a nice sweetness to it (lent out by the Raisins) and it's quite pleasant.

The other special guy is the Niçoise salad - almost traditional, except ours is dressed with a fresh basil vinaigrette and has some grilled asparagus. Topped with tuna and boiled eggs - sure to tempt the tummy, friendly for lacto-ovo pescetarians.

Returning to the menu today is the Smoked Salmon Sandwich. Smoked Salmon sandwiched between St John's Celtic multi grain loaf with a crème fraîche (full of flavours like onion and such). Com'on in. There's got to be something to tickle your belly.

Max

Niagara Falls

My husband travels frequently for work. Actually, his work is travel (he's a tour guide).
For the last two days of this week he's taking a bus of eighth graders to Niagara Falls.
Which leads me to my point: If you are out walking this morning and you squint your eyes real good you can pretend you are standing on the Maid of the Mist enjoying a vacation. Or somewhere above the clouds in Asia.
You can enjoy the rain if you pretend you're somewhere exotic.

If you have trouble imagining and are stuck in this Ontario rain come to Hank's. (Even if you can imagine, you'll probably still want to come anyhow.)
We'll warm you up with two great creations.

Chicken & Chorizo Sausage Stew

Sweet Potato & Coconut Soup (Vegetarian Friendly)

Blogs I Love Part#1

There are many great blogs. I am sure that almost each and everyone of us who spends more than two hours a day on the computer has one they check into at least once in a while.

Every once in a while I'm going to post a blog that I check, or a blog by someone I know and love.
Hopefully it will also find a place in some one's tiny heart as well.

Today's first blog is
www.deargeordi.blogspot.com

This blog is an art work in progress. It follows letters between the writer and the fictional character Geordi La Forge (from Star Trek).
I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I do.

Today's Specials are
Carrot & Ginger Soup (Vegan Friendly!)
Beef & Wild Rice Stew (Meaty!)

Monday Madness

It's Monday and I don't know about you but we all need a little love. It's going to be a great week after a beautiful weekend and we're celebrating it here at Hanks with a healthy little Minestrone Soup, vegetale and homey. Also, Debbie has whipped up her Chicken Curry, which many wait for baited breath with, myself included. We're always putting together some new spring salads, now that all this lovely veg is popping up from the ground. Today, it's asparagus, spring onion and mushrooms with sheeps milk cheddar and a light spring onion vinaigrette. It's awesome and healthy. When does that happen? There is a rumour that strawberries are coming. I feel weepy excited about that.
We'll see you soon in all our spring glory. The weather is finally here! WOOOO HOOOOO!!

As much as I like a never ending parade of dogs - and the appropriate themes that go with it...
I can't help but think that if I hear Who Let the Dogs Out? one more time from the dog show outside I'm going to scream.

Come to Hank's and see the dogs!

We've got a pot of

Fun Things Ago

I was going to write a post about what is going on this weekend - but I'm so over whelmed that I'm going to leave searching for things you love up to you.

Tonigh there is some weird end to the Luminato Festival (which I'm sorry to say I completely missed and know nothing about) Cirque du Soleil arrives at the Central Waterfront to do some performance every half hour (for a total of 4 performances?).
I think it's worth doing tonight.

To keep you over until the dinner hour - or to help you hold your own on the patios of our fine city this afternoon:
Chicken and Mushroom Stew (I've smelled it and it smells divine)
and a lighter option
Parsnip & Apple Soup (It's vegan friendly!)

Exciting News & Stew Day

Hi Hank Fans,
There is exciting Hank's news I haven't had a chance to blog about yet.

This guy shows up with a package last week that doesn't look like anything from our suppliers.
I didn't even see our name on the package at all (the shipping label was hard to find).
I'm trying to tell the delivery guy this can't be for us and he's just all, "Sign for it."

So I bust open this package and as it turns out we've been chosen as a semi-finalist for this Krups contest to see who is the best cafe in Canada. To make it from Toronto's top ten list to the top three spots you have to go online to vote for us.
www.vote.krups.ca
The three finalists will move onto the final Canadian round.

Honestly, we're flattered to be considered among these other nine cafes. At the end of the day we're just hoping you like seeing us for a latte. For a lark - it'll be fun to vote.

Our good friends at Dark Horse are leading the polls and that's still just as exciting. It's nice to see great people doing well.
That's what it is all about at Hank's. Being great overall. Getting it right for you. Making sure your day can be as awesome as possible because of a great cup of coffee and an awesome bowl of stew to fill your belly.

And with that excitement out of the way prepare for...
STEW DAY.
It's a stewy kind of day at Hank's.
Our veggie stew is Mushroom Gumbo (with spicy kick it's vegetarian friendly!)
and our meaty stew is Peanut Chicken Basil Curry (this title won't tell you how tasty it is).
I'm going for both.

Today we are still offering our Special Sandwich - The Smoked Whitefish with Dill Creme Fraiche.

See you soon,
Max

p.s. if you get to krups.ca to vote, thanks!

The beginning of the Barbeque Season

If you're like me and you can avoid the traffic then you can forget about the ol' two seasons (Winter & Construction) you can welcome in a new season: Barbeque Season.
I hooked myself up with a patio/table sized little guy and even though it's not high tech - it certainly does help make some delicious (as well as reducing dinner dishes - which I especially love).

Speaking of delicious:
Stew is a Veggie Stew we are calling
Creamy Carrot Stew. Filled with more than just carrots this stew will fill you with vitamin and mineral delights.
Our soup - for ye ol' meat eaters is something you will NOT want to miss.
Pork Rib Confit Meatballs in a Duck Broth. HOLY MOLY.

A special sandwich for you to enjoy as well:
Smoked Whitefish topped lovingly with dill creme fraiche. If you need the bread with your lunch THIS SANDWICH WILL EXPLODE YOUR TASTE BUDS.

I'm only using CAPS because I am that serious.

See you soon!

June First!

Soon no more classes, no more books. Does that feeling of June ever where off? I still can't get my head wrapped around the fact that work still goes on during the summer months. It's still feels better though. If you aren't feelin good just yet on this little Monday morning, I've got a healthy little bean stew for ya'll, it'll clean you inside and out. If you're feeling more meaty brothy, we've also got a bacon cabbage soup for you to comfort your soul. Will it rain? Who cares, it's Monday.

See you folks soon!
